Deep Lung Device Stops DWI

A deep lung device (DLD) is a machine designed to prevent driving while intoxicated. Installed on your car, a DLD checks the alcohol concentration of your breath before you can start your car. As long as the reading is below 0.030, you can start your car. To operate the DLD, you must blow into the device to obtain a reading. Every 20 minutes while driving you must blow again into the DLD. This prevents you starting your car before drinking.

When Texas Law Requires DLD

In Texas, the law requires the installation of a DLD for all DWI Second cases, if your breath test measured 0.16 or higher, and, in some cases if there was an accident involved in your DWI case. A DLD is also required as a condition of probation for all repeat offender DWI cases. In some instances it can be a condition of an Occupational License.

What DLD Costs You

The DLD is an additional expense. This machine costs $100 to install, plus a monthly rental fee of $70—costs are approximations. In addition to these expenses, once a month you must return to the installer to download data and recalibrate the machine. Failure to do this could result in the forfeiture of your bond.

The DLD measures alcohol concentration on your breath and the number of starts of your car. Failure to start the car 100-125 times a month may indicate you are driving another vehicle not equipped with the required monitoring device.

Explaining DLD to the Carpool

While the DLD is small, resembling a large cell phone or PDA, is quite obviously an add-on device for your car. It may be difficult to explain to passengers, being especially troublesome for salespeople driving customers and parents driving carpools. Although troublesome, this device is guaranteed to keep you from driving your car if you have had too much to drink.

No Mouthwash or Perfume When You Drive

It is important to realize the DLD machine measures alcohol. Therefore you should avoid mouthwash, excessive colognes or perfumes, cough syrup with alcohol or any other consumable containing alcohol before blowing into the DLD. The average time to eliminate alcohol concentration from your mouth is 15 minutes. You should avoid blowing into the device after consuming anything with alcohol.
